Fellow Motoring Enthusiasts, I have been tasked with an automotive quandary that I am ill prepared to deal with. My father needs to retire his 1999 BMW 328i sedan, manual with sport and luxury packages. As he is now in his 70s, he has decided he does not want to go with another sports sedan or sports car, they are just too hard to get in and out of.

He has decided that he needs a luxury crossover SUV. He has asked me for help.

Now what has been decided is he will go the lightly used route, and based on my experience of milking every last dime out of a CarMax extended warranty, CarMax will likely be the dealer of choice.

My father does not like, as he terms them "Asian Cars," when I remind him that his 1990 Plymouth Laser Turbo was really a Mitsubishi Eclipse, he tells me it was a Plymouth and we move on. This all stems from poor treatment at a Honda Dealer in 1983. So the Acura and Lexus are out. The Volvo is out as he told me he wishes not to join a cult.

So what are we left with? The Audi Q5, BMW X5, Buick Enclave, Cadillac SRX, Lincoln MKX, Ford Edge (Fully Loaded)

So what are his requirements? I'm glad you asked, comfortable, quiet, mild off-road capabilities, roomy without being huge.

Anyone who can chime in with something I didn't think of with or ownership/driving stories of any of the mentioned vehicles will be appreciated.

Totally off-topic, but every time I see you post, I want to create a user account named, "No, it's just a Ford Contour"

LR3/4 or a Range Rover Evoque or even an LR2 (although the most camery of the Land Rovers)

I take it he wants a crossover due to the ease of ingress and egress? An X3, or an X5 would most likely offer him that seat height that he's looking for, but still offer decent driving dynamics.

The Ford Edge might uh, edge out the Xs in terms of cushy ride however.

Unfortunately those don't have the desired ground clearance. In his past automotive experience he has owned 3 Wagons, 2 of which were brown, (The 74 Country Squire was orange with wood paneling) none had the manual transmission though.

The X3 and Q5 are both really nice. Enclave is meh and the SRX doesn't have the best reliability history. The Ford/Linclon twins are ok. He should also consider the Acura RDX, not as fancy as the Germans but it rides nice and is unlikely to break with the Acura/Honda reliability, and thus he would not have to spend an extra couple of grand on the extended warranty. While CarMax is great for their extended warranties...keep in mind I might be able to find him a better CPO value elsewhere.

I would be happy to discuss options with him at no charge-

Porsche Cayenne. The non fully loaded non turbo base models are very reasonably priced. I just checked and CarMax has multiple listed. Basically the luxury Taureg. My dad has had one for 5 years now without a single problem.

Is he planning on taking it mildly off road? If not, I have an outside the box suggestion for easy in-n-out that's quiet and roomy without being huge:

Audi Q5 or Range Rover Evoque are the only ones I can seriously recommend.

The Ford Edge replaces the MKX, because the Edge is genuinely has luxurious as the MKX on the inside. Unless the style of the Lincoln is preferred of course.

Yes, he has cabin in the Maine woods that is down a lightly maintained logging road. He used to have a Chrysler Town and Country van that could handle the road no sweat.

what about a Lexus GX...technically Lexus is an American company, as they are only sold here. I guess it depends on how much "off road" he needs.

Nope, he is hopelessly against the Lexus and Acura brands. His BMW mechanic told him to get an Acura and see less of him. Here is the strange part in our youth he bought both me and my brother Datsuns/Nissans

Audi Q7 easy to get in, drive, and fun to own. My dad has one and he loves every second of it.

I know he doesn't like them durned Asian Cars but an MDX would probably be perfect for him.

I think for your pops we should also rule out those durned touchscreens (GET OFF MY LAWN TOUCHSCREENS!)

Of the ones you listed I would probably go X5. The 2011-up X3 is pretty nice too. This is the X3 back seat, plenty roomy:

Kinja'd!!!

My next choice after that would be an SRX at significantly reduced prices. But a 2010-2012 because in 2013 they made that CUE touchscreen standard. 2010-2011 had a 265 hp 3.0 V6 or an unreliable 300 hp Saab 2.8 turbo V6 (do not get the turbo). 2102 they switched to 306 hp 3.6 V6.

Q5 - screams suburban housewife

Enclave - Probably bigger than he wants

MKX/Edge - maybe, but kinda unexciting and a lot of them will have the MyFordTouchesMyLincolnTouch.

Dark horse would be a 2011-up Grand Cherokee. Might be a little bigger/truckier than he wants but they're kinda nice too.

The touch screens don't phase him, this is a man who routinely works on 3 computers at once. His dislike of Asian cars is mainly ergonomics, not that he has been in one in the last 20 years, but he remembers the insane dashboards of the 1980s.

Well, then he should avoid the touchscreens because they're crap, even if he can work them fine. ;)
